Beroe returns to the WABA with coach Nikolay Gospodinov

The two-time WABA champion Beroe Stara Zagora is officially returning to the WABA League after a one-year hiatus, appointing the highly experienced Nikolay Gospodinov as their new head coach.

Gospodinov is a familiar face in the regional championship, having previously coached rival Bulgarian side Montana 2003 during the 2022/23 WABA season and successfully guided the team to the prestigious Final Four tournament.

His notable career achievements include leading Dunav 2007 Ruse to a historic double as head coach during the 2010/11 season, capturing both the Bulgarian Championship and the Cup while putting together a dominant streak of 22 consecutive victories. He later served as the assistant coach for Levski Sofia in the 2013/14 season, helping the club secure a historic domestic treble by winning the Bulgarian National League title, the Balkan International Basketball League (BIBL), and the Bulgarian Cup in a single campaign. Gospodinov also found success abroad during the 2017/18 season, when he managed TSV Wasserburg in the German DBBL and EuroCup Women, lifting the German Cup. He also led Vllaznia Shkodra (Albania) at the start of the 2019/20 season, Metropol Schwabach (Germany) in the 2020/21 season and Nyon (Switzerland) in the 2023-24 season.

Beyond his club career, he has contributed heavily to the development of Bulgarian basketball, serving as a coach for the Bulgarian Senior National Team and various youth selections, including the Women’s U18 National Team.
